NiMet Forecasts Three Days of Sunshine and Scattered Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

Nigerian Meteorological Agency

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook predicting a combination of intense sunshine, hazy conditions, and isolated thunderstorms across the country from Tuesday, 3 February to Thursday, 5 February 2026. The forecast indicates a significant atmospheric shift as dust particles remain in suspension while southern regions prepare for early seasonal rains.

Northern and Central Regions: Persistent Sunshine and Haze

According to the weather outlook released by NiMet on Monday, the northern region is expected to maintain a sunny atmosphere throughout the forecast period. Residents in the far north should anticipate clear skies, though visibility may be slightly affected by suspended dust particles.

In the North-Central region, a few patches of clouds accompanied by a hazy atmosphere are anticipated. Specifically:

  • Tuesday: Slim prospects of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Southern Kwara during the later hours.

  • Wednesday: Potential for isolated thunderstorms and light rains over southern parts of Kogi, Benue, and Kwara states.

Southern Region: Afternoon Thunderstorms Expected

The southern states are set to experience sunny skies during the morning hours, transitioning to more volatile weather in the afternoon and evening. NiMet anticipates thunderstorms and light rains across several states, including:

  • Coastal & Inland Areas: Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers.

  • Specific Outlook: On Wednesday, the intensity is expected to spread further inland to include Abia and Anambra.

Public Health and Safety Advisory

In light of the prevailing weather patterns, NiMet has urged the public to take necessary precautions. The agency highlighted that dust particles in suspension pose risks to individuals with respiratory conditions.

“People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather condition,” the agency stated.

Additionally, motorists are advised to exercise caution due to potentially slippery roads and reduced visibility during thunderstorms. Airline operators have been directed to obtain updated, airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet to ensure effective operational planning and passenger safety.
