Nigeria Issues Emergency Contacts for Citizens Abroad

The Nigerian government has released emergency hotline numbers for citizens living in the Middle East following escalating hostilities linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The advisory, issued through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), urges Nigerians across affected countries to remain vigilant and maintain contact with diplomatic missions for immediate assistance.

Government Activates Consular Support Channels

According to NiDCOM, the emergency hotlines are intended to provide urgent consular support to Nigerians who may face security risks as the conflict intensifies across parts of the Middle East.

The commission emphasised that the numbers will enable citizens to quickly reach Nigerian embassies and consulates for guidance on evacuation procedures, travel advisories, or other emergency assistance.

Chairperson of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, advised Nigerians residing in or travelling through the region to save the emergency numbers and remain in regular contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions.

She stressed that staying connected to official channels will help ensure that citizens receive timely information as the security situation evolves.

These numbers will serve as direct communication channels between Nigerian citizens and diplomatic missions in the event of security threats or emergencies.

Advisory for Nigerians in Affected Countries

NiDCOM also urged Nigerians living in the Middle East to follow safety instructions issued by local authorities and international security agencies.

Citizens were advised to:

  • Avoid high-risk areas and potential conflict zones

  • Monitor official security advisories from host governments

  • Maintain regular communication with Nigerian embassies

  • Remain alert to possible evacuation instructions if conditions deteriorate

The commission confirmed that Nigerian diplomatic missions across the region remain on standby to assist citizens who require urgent support.

Escalating Regional Conflict

The advisory comes as tensions in the Middle East have escalated following military strikes and retaliatory attacks between Iran, Israel, and allied forces.

The conflict, which intensified after coordinated airstrikes on Iran in late February 2026, has triggered missile and drone attacks across several countries in the region, raising security concerns for foreign nationals.

The crisis has also disrupted aviation routes, prompted travel advisories from multiple governments, and triggered preparations for potential evacuations of foreign citizens.

Nigeria Monitoring Situation

The Federal Government has stated that it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Nigerians abroad.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NiDCOM have assured citizens that necessary measures will be taken if evacuation becomes necessary.

Authorities have also urged Nigerians in the region to remain calm while prioritising safety and following official instructions from diplomatic missions.

Outlook

The release of emergency hotline numbers represents Nigeria’s first line of response to the escalating Middle East crisis. By strengthening communication between citizens and embassies, the government aims to ensure that Nigerians abroad have access to rapid consular support should the security situation deteriorate further.

As geopolitical tensions continue to evolve, Nigerian authorities are expected to maintain close monitoring of the conflict while preparing contingency plans to protect citizens in the region.
