Lagos Implements Traffic Diversion for Ikeja’s Ogunnusi Road Reconstruction Starting March 6
Lagos State Government Details Ikeja Traffic Diversion for Ogunnusi Road Works 2026
The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion and management plan ahead of the Phase I reconstruction and expansion of Ogunnusi Road in Ikeja Local Government Area, scheduled to commence Friday, March 6, 2026.
The announcement, issued in an official statement by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, Lagos State Government, underscores preparatory measures aimed at maintaining traffic flow while enabling extensive structural works on this critical urban corridor.
Strategic Infrastructure Upgrade
Ogunnusi Road, a vital arterial link between Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop and Mobil Filling Station Junction (Ijaye/Agege bound) within Ikeja, is set to undergo phased reconstruction and dual carriage expansion as part of Lagos State’s broader infrastructure improvement agenda.
The overall project spans approximately 9 kilometres, with Phase I covering 4.5 kilometres from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to the Mobil Filling Station Junction. Works are expected to continue through multiple phases until January 6, 2028, with the first phase projected for completion by February 6, 2027.
Traffic Diversion Plan and Alternative Routes
To facilitate uninterrupted construction activities, the Lagos State Government has implemented a detailed traffic rerouting strategy that includes:
Closed Construction Zone:
No vehicular access will be permitted within the defined work zone during Phase I.
Inward Ijaye/Agege Traffic:
Motorists travelling toward Ijaye/Agege from Ojodu-Berger will be diverted onto a contraflow configuration on the opposite carriageway for approximately one kilometre before rejoining the main route.
Alternative access is available via Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Way → Otunba Jobifele Way → Obafemi Awolowo Way → Lateef Jakande Road.
Articulated Vehicles & Trucks:
Drivers coming from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway bound for Agege are advised to use a dedicated diversion through Ojota/Maryland → Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way → Kodesoh Street → Oba Akran Avenue → Guinness Roundabout → Ogba Road toward Pen Cinema.
Outbound Ijaye/Agege Traffic:
Vehicles travelling from Ijaye/Agege toward Ojodu-Berger will maintain through access but will temporarily merge into a contraflow adjacent to the work zone before re-entering the main carriageway.
Operational and Safety Considerations
In addition to alternative routes, the government plans to deploy traffic management officials and emergency tow vehicles along the corridor to respond promptly to breakdowns or incidents and to support motorists navigating the diversions.
Osiyemi advised motorists and commuters to plan travel ahead, exercise patience, observe signage, and comply with direction from traffic officials to minimise disruptions and ensure safety throughout the reconstruction period.
Context and Broader Infrastructure Programme
This diversion forms part of a series of road rehabilitation and traffic management initiatives currently underway in Lagos, including extensive works on the Lekki-Ajah corridor and other urban thoroughfares aimed at easing congestion and improving transport efficiency across Nigeria’s most populous city.
With Lagos’ rapid urban growth and increasing demand for quality road infrastructure, such planned interventions seek to balance long-term mobility improvements with short-term traffic mitigation strategies.
