Kano State Government Approves N6.9 Billion for Infrastructure and Welfare Projects

Potrait of Abba-Yusuf-Kano-Governor

The Kano State Executive Council has approved over N6.9 billion for the execution of various infrastructure, education, and social welfare projects across the state. The decision was reached during the council's 36th meeting, presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, disclosed the details of the approvals during a press briefing, noting that the funds are aimed at accelerating development and improving the welfare of residents.

Breakdown of Approved Expenditures

A significant portion of the N6.9 billion is dedicated to road infrastructure and compensation for affected property owners. Key approvals include:

  • Road Construction: N2.6 billion was approved for the construction of the Yandodo–Mai-Allo Road.

  • Compensation: N859.2 million has been earmarked for property owners affected by the 5km road construction project in Tudun Wada Local Government Area.

  • Drainage and Flood Control: N358.5 million was approved for storm water drainage in Kano Municipal, while N896 million was allocated for the reconstruction of a failed culvert in Kiru Local Government Area.

  • Hydraulic Structures: N1.2 billion was approved for the construction of a 10-cell reinforced concrete box culvert and related structures along the Karari–Kwaimawa–Badau road corridor.

Education and Human Capital Development

The council also authorized spending to strengthen the state’s education and vocational sectors:

  • School Infrastructure: N285 million was approved for the construction of storey blocks of four classrooms across the 44 local government areas.

  • Youth Empowerment: N431.7 million was allocated for the graduation ceremony and provision of empowerment kits for beneficiaries of the state’s Entrepreneurship Institutes.

  • Water Supply: N85.6 million was approved for the extension of water pipelines in Gwale Local Government Area.

Legislative and Governance Reforms

In addition to the financial approvals, the council authorized the transmission of four bills to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative action. These bills include:

  1. Kano State Local Governments Administration Bill 2025

  2. Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council Bill 2025

  3. Kano State Education Bill 2025

  4. Audu Bako College of Agriculture Law 2025 (intended to rename the institution)

Furthermore, the council approved the implementation of the state’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy and Manual, aimed at attracting private sector involvement in infrastructure delivery.

Context of the Approval

The N6.9 billion disbursement follows the recent signing of the N1.477 trillion 2026 "Budget of Infrastructure and Consolidation" by Governor Yusuf. The state government has maintained a focus on capital expenditure, with 2026 allocations prioritizing education (30%), infrastructure (25%), and healthcare (16%).

According to Commissioner Waiya, these approvals reflect the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the closure of infrastructure gaps within the state.
