Abia State, recognized as the commercial nerve center of Southeast Nigeria, is organized into 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). These are divided into three Senatorial Districts: Abia North, Abia Central, and Abia South.

In 2026, these LGAs are no longer just centers for salary payments. 2026 Economic & Industrial Hubs

In 2026, specific LGAs have been designated as specialized economic zones:

  1. Aba South & Aba North: The "China of Africa." These LGAs remain the epicenter of garment and footwear manufacturing, now powered by the Geometric Power Plant which provides 24/7 electricity to the industrial clusters.

  2. Ukwa West (Owaza): The location of the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP). This LGA is the state’s primary oil and gas hub, now hosting modular refineries and petrochemical industries.
